Studying in Cyprus: the educational hub of the Mediterranean

In short
- Cyprus combines English-taught studies inside the EU with a familiar Greek-speaking environment.
- There are public and private universities, colleges, a maritime academy and specialist schools.
- Before enrolment we always check the programme’s recognition by DOATAP.
Cyprus has become a modern educational hub, attracting students and academics from all over the world. It combines the safety and hospitality of a Mediterranean country with modern facilities and campuses. For many pupils from Greece it is the first alternative. But it also has pitfalls, concerning the choice of university, recognition, the field of study and the programmes themselves.
Why Cyprus
- English-taught studies inside the EU: a European degree, with no visa for Greek citizens.
- Greek or English: many programmes are offered in both languages.
- A familiar culture: thousands of students from Greece already live on the island, so settling in is easier.
- In-demand fields: shipping (especially in Limassol), finance, technology and real estate.
The institutions
Public universities
The University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology and the Open University of Cyprus. For EU citizens, undergraduate studies at public institutions have no tuition fees, and applicants from Greece compete for places based on the Panhellenic Exams.
Private universities and colleges
The University of Nicosia (UNIC), European University Cyprus (EUC), Frederick University, Neapolis University and others, as well as colleges, the maritime academy and specialist schools (culinary arts, aesthetics and more). Admission is by application, without the Panhellenic Exams.
The pitfalls we help you avoid
- Recognition: it is not enough for the institution to be recognised; the specific programme matters too. See our guide DOATAP and rankings.
- Professional rights: especially for engineering, health and law, we check what rights the degree gives in Greece and Cyprus.
- Scholarships: academic or athletic, with deadlines and terms that must be claimed in time.
- Cost: tuition and living costs, so the decision is sustainable.
Links with the job market
We filter the options according to where the market needs people. For example, future engineers learn about registering with ETEK, the Cyprus technical chamber, and accounting students about the ACCA exam exemptions many programmes offer.
The advantage of a local presence
EduConnexion has a counselling office in Cyprus. That means direct contact with university admissions offices, real knowledge of the market and practical help: from finding accommodation to paperwork and joining the student community. For the island’s medical schools, see our guide medicine in Greece and Cyprus.
